A shift from high school to college is an event of excitement for the teenagers. College brings the excitement of future planning, freedom, and new opportunities to socialize.

For some of the students, it may be challenging and stressful to be in college because of the change. Some students have to move away from their homes due to college and lose the home support system. Another challenge in college is to balance different demands for success.

1. Realistic Expectations:

There is a lot of difference in school and college education so a student who had a great academic record at school may face difficulties at the start. Setting realistic expectations is critical for each milestone at college.

This will reduce stress and keep the students a bit relaxed. It will also give them the time to adjust to the new environment in the college.

Feedback from teachers and observation from your social network will let you reflect on your direction if it is right or not.

2. Recognize Symptoms:

Most of the students go through feelings of stress and anxiety temporarily during college time. But if the same feelings are consistent for a longer period and affecting the functional ability of a student, then that is a time to take it seriously and seek support from someone.

Avoidance, procrastination, social isolation, change in sleeping and eating habits, and loss of pleasure are few signs of stress and anxiety to mention here.

Seeking help from others when students are going through a difficult time in college can help them get out of stress and anxiety quickly.

All the colleges have counseling centers and they are familiar with most of the problems students go through. These services might be for a short time but they can refer to the private resource center in that specific area.

Students can directly go to a counselor of their choice as well.

4. Self-Care:

Self-care to get out of stress is as important as seeking help from a specialist. Self-care is all about taking care of oneself in all aspects.

Balanced meals that are healthy and nutritious will keep the body of the students light and relaxed. Physical exercise will help them to stay busy and active at the same time. Proper and sufficient sleep is also important to take care of oneself.

5. Learn Coping Skills that healthy:

Stress and anxiety are part and parcel of the life of an individual. Everyone needs to learn how to deal with stressors. The same is true for college students as well.

Coping skill may not eliminate the anxiety but will let students tolerate and get through stressful situations.

Self-soothing, mediation, embracing challenges, breaking down a difficult task into small parts, and combating the negative talk are a few examples of healthy coping skills.

Last but not least always keep in check with your support network to get out of stress and anxiety.
